DESCRIPTION:Honors Faculty Lecture Series \nSemester Theme: Fabric \nFeatured Speaker: Susie Mallard Barnes\, Ph.D.\, MSW \nLearning Commons\, Hackney Library \nFor additional information\, contact Gerard Lange\, Director of the Whitehurst Family Honors Program\, at glange@barton.edu or 252-399-6475. \n  \nAbout Susie Mallard Barnes\, Ph.D.\, MSW: \nDr. Susie Mallard Barnes serves as the Director of the Social Work Program\, overseeing both the Traditional and Professional Studies BSW options.  Dr. Barnes has over 20 years of experience in social work education\, program development and evaluation.  Prior to teaching\, Dr. Barnes worked in homeless services as the director of large shelter and transitional housing program in Raleigh. A Raleigh native\, Dr. Barnes earned her BSW from NC State and her MSW from UNC-Chapel Hill. Her PhD in social work is from U-Texas at Austin.  Dr. Barnes’ areas of interest and work include housing and food insecurity\, restorative Justice\, poverty as trauma\,  race and gender bias\, and LGBTQ rights.

DESCRIPTION:Honors Faculty Lecture Series \nSemester Theme: Fabric \nFeatured Speaker: Dr. Farzad Mohaddes\, Ph.D. \nLearning Commons\, Hackney Library \nFor additional information\, contact Gerard Lange\, Director of the Whitehurst Family Honors Program\, at glange@barton.edu or 252-399-6475. \n  \nAbout Dr. Farzad Mohaddes\, Ph.D.: \nDr. Farzad Mohaddes was born and raised in Iran (AKA Persia). He completed his bachelor’s and master’s in textile chemistry and polymer science in Iran. In his late 20s\, Dr. Mohaddes moved to Australia to pursue his education in the same discipline at the Ph.D. level. He obtained his doctorate from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University)\, Melbourne\, Australia in 2015. Following his graduation\, Dr. Mohaddes started his first postdoctoral fellowship at RMIT School of Applied Chemistry focusing on the retrieval and characterization of cosmetic-based microplastics/microbeads from different origins i.e. fauna\, flora\, aqua\, and soil. Meanwhile\, Dr. Mohaddes enjoyed teaching chemistry courses and advising graduate researchers until he found his faith in moving to the US. He started his second post-doctoral fellowship at NC State University in 2018. At NC State\, Dr. Mohaddes led different research projects on metal oxide gas sensors\, microfabrication of 3D stackable thermoelectric generators (TEGs)\, fabrication and characterization of flexible TEGs\, development of porous elastomers with ultra-high and ultra-low thermal conductivity for energy harvesting applications. Dr. Mohaddes joined Barton College in the capacity of Assistant Professor of Chemistry in August 2023. \nSome of his areas of interest are spectroscopy\, chemical synthesis & functionalization\, pharmaceutical chemistry\, bio-composites\, and materials science & engineering. \nIn his spare time\, Dr. Mohaddes enjoys swimming\, playing chess\, traveling\, playing the piano and guitar\, and tasting new foods with family and friends.

DESCRIPTION:Honors Faculty Lecture Series \nSemester Theme: Fabric \nFeatured speaker: Dorothy Austin-Harrell \nLearning Commons\, Hackney Library \nFor additional information\, contact Gerard Lange\, Director of the Whitehurst Family Honors Program\, at glange@barton.edu or 252-399-6475. \n  \nAbout Dorothy Austin-Harrell\, M.F.A.: \nDorothy Austin-Harrell is an Assistant Professor of Theatre and Head of Costumes and Props. A native of North Carolina\, she received a dual B.F.A. in Theatre Arts from East Carolina University\, with concentrations in Musical Theatre and Design and Production. After graduating\, she worked as ECU’s Costume Shop Manager for several years before attending graduate school at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts to earn her terminal degree\, an M.F.A. in Costume Design. Prior to Barton\, she taught as a graduate assistant at UNCSA and a visiting professor at ECU. \nIn addition to designing or supervising the costumes and props for all of Barton’s student productions\, Dorothy continues to work as a professional costume designer. Theatres she has worked for include Theatre Raleigh\, RhinoLeap Productions\, Children’s Theatre of Charlotte\, Flat Rock Playhouse\, Fletcher Opera Institute\, Triad Stage\, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Notable works include costume design for Fletcher Opera Institute’s La Tragédie de Carmen\, which earned first place in the National Opera Association’s 2015-2016 Opera Production Competition. She was also a recipient of the Fletcher Fellowship in that same year. \n
